SOIL TESTING
K-State Agronomy Lab
Many different analyses for soil samples are conducted at the KSU Soil Testing Lab. The most common analyses requested include tests for pH, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), nitrate (NO3), and organic matter. If you would like to know more about the soil in your yard, bring in a sample for testing.

How to take a soil sample:
1. Remove debris from soil before inserting the soil probe, spade, or trowel.
2. Garden soils and shrubs/ flower beds should generally be sampled from the soil surface to the depth of tillage, about 6-8 inches. Sample turf areas to a 4 inch depth. When using a spade, turn out one spade full and then shave a one inch slice of earth from the side of the hole. Do this in at least 5 or 6 different places.
3. Mix the samples together in a clean bucket and collect no more than 2 cups of soil, place in a clean container.
4. Bring the sample in to your District Extension office and we will collect your sample and any information that is needed. We will then make recommendations for you based on the soil test results.

Average cost of soil analysis including postage $15-$20
